When it comes to eye care, US Veterans are an often-missed population. For those who qualify for VA health care benefits, the VA will cover some or all of vision care. However, the majority of Veterans do not go to VA hospitals for eye care and many are not being diagnosed properly. In addition, ophthalmologists and optometrists are not accustomed to asking patients if they are Veterans or have been in a war and they lack experience with combat-related vision issues.

This educational activity aims to inform eye care practitioners how to appropriately identify Veterans and provide care. The target audience is Retina specialists, comprehensive ophthalmologists, retina fellows, optometrists, ophthalmic techs, nurses and other healthcare providers.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify patients who are Veterans
  • Screen for eye conditions prevalent among Veterans
  • Manage Veterans with eye disease using the appropriate screening tools and technology
  • Understand the impact of race and ethnicity on risk for vision threatening eye diseases
  • Recognize vision problems associated with TBI, combat, and mental illnesses
  • Evaluate the preoperative, perioperative, and postoperative approaches to Veterans undergoing cataract surgery
  • Diagnose and treat dry eye syndrome
